Festive Glamour

The Christmas rush had almost got the better of me; I had aimed to do this post for Thursday afternoon, but two days later and here it is! I am sure you understand, but I was determined to do something before Christmas and in particular, I thought this rather festive look would give you some vintage inspiration!

I recently bought a gorgeous hair flower from my local vintage repro shop that had a festive feel to it, perfect for my Christmas party outfit (see my Instagram for my full outfit). I will most certainly be wearing this piece on the big day itself, but I had an idea to try a new style on my only day off this week, so I decided to have a sit down at my vanity and play around with my hair and make up – using the hair flower.
My favourite Christmas colour combination is red and gold, and so I wanted to try and work this into my make up look.

Festive Glam

Firstly, I had a play around with my hair; since having 8 inches chopped off(!), I was wondering if I would still be able to do a Gibson roll. I tried it without using a hair rat and instead ended up with a messy chignon, which I wasn’t unhappy about! With a bit of decoration, I was quite pleased with the result. I will attempt a proper Gibson roll in the new year, as a bought a mini hair donut to trim for my new shorter ‘do.

Onto my favourite part of getting ready – the make up! For more information about my typical make up routine, check out my full in depth tutorial I did a few months ago.
The base products I am currently using (and will update you properly in the new year) are the Too Faced Born This Way foundation, Tarte Shape Tape concealer, No.7 powder, Benefit Hoola bronzer and Benefit Dandelion blush, as well as the Nyx eyebrow pencil.

I started by applying some cool toned transition colours in my crease – this is typically how I start any eye look. I really wanted to create a halo eyeshadow look, something I don’t do often at all, but looks so pretty!

Using the Jaclyn Hill x Morphe palette, I began the halo by applying a warm brown/red shade to the outer and inner corner of my eye, building up the pigment so not to go over the top and make a mess! I then added a darker, more red shadow to add some depth and build up the colour. I took a clean fluffy brush to blend the edges on the shadow to avoid any harsh lines.
(I apologise for the awful ‘foundation on lips’ look I have going on in these photos…)

As this was a look that I hadn’t tried before, it took a little bit of time, tweaking and quite a lot of blending! I kept building up the colour with various red shades until I was happy. I then applied a gold shade to the centre of the lid where no colour had been applied – I dampened the brush with some setting spray to make the gold more vivid and intense. Then, I blended the same red shades onto the lower lash line, on the outer corner to the middle. I then applied a little of the gold shade to the inner third on the lower lash line to tie in with the colour scheme. I also applied a very light shimmery colour to the very inner corner, to highlight and brighten. I thought something was missing from the eyes and then I realised – glitter! I topped the gold eyeshadow on both the lid and lash line with the Urban Decay Heavy Metal Liner in Midnight Cowboy.
I finished the look with some highlighter on the cheekbones (from the eyeshadow palette) and my favourite red lippie – The Balm liquid lipstick in ‘Loyal’.

I played around with the placement of the hair flower after that – on the side of the head, as well as tucked at the top of the messy chignon style.
All together, I am really happy with the result of this look – it did take me a while to get the red shades to blend and look as I wanted them to, but it’s not often a look or colour I play with often. But as I say, the I am pleased with the end result!

I hope this look inspires you to try something different for your holiday style – I love dressing up on Christmas day and playing with glitter and shimmer eyeshadows!
I wish you all a very merry Christmas and I will catch up with you all soon!
