Trying out a French twist! [Spring is coming!]

With the sunshine beaming this weekend, I couldn’t help but think that spring is near! Even though it was still a chill in the air, I was so happy for the blue sky and I was desperate to bust out some springtime outfits!

As you may well know by now, I am forever looking for easy vintage hair-do’s to try, and since the new series of Call The Midwife has been showing on BBC1 on a Sunday evening, I have been itching to try a French twist, ala Shelagh Turner!
There are lots of tutorials on YouTube for this, so there wasn’t one in particular that I followed, but I noticed there are two main ways of doing this – pinning the hair to one side first, to have the bobby pins as a base to the twist, or just twisting and pinning… so I tried the twist and pin way… because it seemed quicker!

My hair was straight and a couple of days dirty (as dirty hair is better for holding vintage styles). I was quite excited to try a French twist just so I didn’t have to curl ALL my hair!
So first of all, I sectioned the front of my hair, to create a bouffant with lots of volume. I teased this whole section, then smoothed with my smoothing brush, some pomade and of course, lots of hairspray.

Once this was all smooth and as desired, I pinned this at the back of my head, and the twist would cover these pins in theory. Then I could start on the twist itself. I gathered my hair in a low ponytail and literally twisted it for a few turns, then turned it up to where the twist should be pinned. I continued twisting until my hair reached the crown of my head and then tucked the rest of the tail into the twist itself – this is where I struggled the most = hiding the rest of the hair, as I have so much of it! I’m not sure if I explained this very well, as it was difficult to photograph what I was doing, but I promise there are some great tutorials to find on YouTube.

It took some finessing, tucking and smoothing, but I am quite pleased with the outcome, for a first time try! I finished with some pomade to smooth the sides and, of course, lots of hairspray. I know it’s not perfect, but it’s a start!

The French twist was seen more in the late fifties and throughout the sixties, I really felt like a 1960’s housewife with this look, I really like it! You could certainly add some more style to the front of the hair instead of just a bouffant type do, but I did enjoy the volume it gave me!

As it was sunny, I raided my wardrobe to see what I might have to match the weather and the springtime vibe and I was so happy with what I found! Mainly a Collectif outfit (no surprise there!) – a blue gingham circle skirt with my lace blouse that has already featured on my blog, with a pink New Look cardigan and New Look white wedges. Oh, and a Lindy Bop petticoat!IMG_9227

I am really into adding belts to outfits at the moment, for a cinched-in waist. It’s just as well this skirt comes with one and some all-important pockets!

Are you feeling that spring is near too? Or is it just me? I think I’m being a bit optimistic as it is still under 10 degrees celcius in the UK, plus now that the weekend has been and gone, it’s back to being grey and miserable!
